Training and Certification Levels

Terminology and levels of certification

Successfully Passed
The term "Successfully Passed" on our certificates implies the candidate completed the required training to a satisfactory level of evaluation and subsequent competence, knowledge or ability was evaluated at the time. This is usually through a practical and written (test) assessment.

"Has Attended ..."
The term "... has attended" on our certificates implies the candidate completed a course or event through being there but not subsequent level of competence or ability was tested and can be awarded.

Usefully the certificate we provide states a clear level of "Certification" on it. For example, A First Aid Certificate will state that the participant has pass and is now ~ ... or Stop the Bleed or Tactical Medicine may state that they complete the course.

When teaching NFPA and other Technical subjects, sometimes the language is similar but specific in it's level so

3.2.2 * Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) (NFPA 1670 - 2017 Edition).
An organization, office, or individual responsible for enforcing the requirements of a code or standard, or for approving equipment, materials, an installation, or a procedure.

1.5 Operational Levels. (NFPA 1006 – Chapter 19, 2017 Edition).
The AHJ shall establish written standard operating procedures (SOPs) consistent with one of the following operational levels for each of the disciplines defined in this document:

(1) Awareness level.
This level represents the minimum capability of individuals who provide response to technical search and rescue incidents.

(2) Operations level.
This level represents the capability of individuals to respond to technical search and rescue incidents and to identify hazards, use equipment, and apply limited techniques specified in this standard to support and participate in technical search and rescue incidents.

(3) Technician level.
This level represents the capability of individuals to respond to technical search and rescue incidents and to identify hazards, use equipment, and apply advanced techniques specified in this standard necessary to coordinate, perform, and supervise technical search and rescue incidents.

Responder level.
This level is not an official NFPA Category but ne we sometimes teach to in various subjects and in an NFPA type environment (or others) we would pitch it somewhere between the Awareness Level (supporting hot zone Operations) and Operations level (for actually being usefully deployable in the area of incident and activities for medical or rescuer incidents etc.

DIDACTIC, TECHNICAL & LEADERSHIP TRAINING & CERTIFICATES

Coordinator
Has been trained to organise and coordinate a particular course as well as answer some administrative and technical questions which may even lead to certification.

Invigilator
Has been trained to specifically proctor or supervisor an examination or testing for maintaining the proper conduct of a particular examination in accordance with the testing process and proper oversight.

Preceptor
Has been trained to facilitate training and provide instruction, training, and supervision to others in the given subject.

Technician Instructor Level
Same as a Preceptor but has also been practically evaluated to Operate at the required level of knowledge and skills.

Tactical Advisor "TacAd"
This is for technical leadership and command personnel who may be required to advise or command at incidents at a tactical or operational level and would have, as a minimum, a good 'awareness' level in the given subject or usually much higher, both in technical and leadership capacity.

Subject Matter Expert / Advisor: "SME / SMA"
A subject-matter expert (SME) or Advisor is a person who has a deep understanding, usually through education, evaluation, experience and assessment and is now recognised as an authority in a particular area or topic. Many technical and leadership prerequisites before we award this level.
